Full moon triggered a rare coral breeding event in the Great Barrier Reef

coral breeding in the barrier reef

Known as the Annual Sex Festival, the Great Barrier Reef is know for its tens of thousands of different species of beautiful soft and hard corals. Last nights full moon officially launched the breeding event in which the coral launch sperm into the water creating a 'snowstorm' of sperm

The reason these corals coordinate like this every year is that with everybody spurting eggs and sperm into the water at the same time, the chances of their sex cells finding a match are much higher than if they just threw their seed out at random times.
